Process

Divide the class into groups of 3-4 students and assign each group a business letter type: inquiring, placing an order or complaining. Make sure there is the same number of groups for each letter type.

Each team has to write a business letter type. They have to use the links provided in the webquest for each type of letter, and to know the business letter evaluation rubric. The more they know about how they are going to be assessed and evaluated the better.

When the students finish the letters, you will have to exchange them among the groups. The exchanging groups will be distributed according to letter types. That is, a group with a placing an order letter will be given another placing an order letter type to revise (never any of the other two other types).

The students have to peer review the assigned letter following the correction symbols sheet and filling in the business letter evaluation rubric .

You will collect the letters, once revised, and the corresponding business letter evaluation rubric. Then, you will asses the letters content and form as well as the students' revision following the business letter evaluation rubric. At this point assessment of the peer-review evaluation done by the students is also needed. New corrections or notes, different from the ones done by the students, should be marked in a different colour ink. (Check peer review evaluation rubric).

Finally, the students have to prepare a 10-minute oral presentation including the steps each team has followed to write the letter and present the final version. For the presentation, they have to use visuals such as PowerPoint slides. Some links concerning how to make oral presentations and tutorials on PowerPoint are also provided. Your task will consist in assessing and evaluating the oral presentation following the oral presentation evaluation rubric .

As a result, you have to evaluate the three activities carried out by the students in this lesson following the evaluation rubrics and the correction symbols sheet.

This lesson was designed to be implemented in 5 sessions of 50 minutes each, computers are needed in all the sessions. The table below is only a proposal, never a fixed teaching plan. Teachers can adapt this webquest to their particular teaching conditions and needs such as for example: type of rooms, class size and facilities.
